I have a nonprofit organization and every year I have a dinner for the homeless and families in need. I believe in giving and also helping others to give as well. I am a professor at a local university and my daughter is a high school teacher, therefore, we get our students involved by volunteering. They are asked to help build gift baskets for the guests and they can donate items to be placed in the baskets. They are also involved in wrapping toys that are donated by Toys for Tots, setting up a clothes closet, and serving our guest at the dinner. My church asked the youth ministry to donate $1 every sunday to help contribute to the dinner and in 4 weeks they reaised $197.00. One of my college students raised $240.00 from the people on her job and others (friends and family) donated food for the dinner, transportation, clothes, money, and also helped to serve. This was a big collaborative effort and required a lot of work out of all, but we had a very successfull night. The guest numbered 160 and we were able to feed and give a gift to all accept 6 adults.

This was an event that reached out to the people in need in our community, but it also exposed my students and others to the importance of giving and helping those less fortunate than ourselves. Some of my volunteers were so excited and now they cannot wait until the next event. Sometimes we have to help others find a way to give of themselves.
